Plan Your Posts
Are you ready for the last step before you actually start creating content?
Great! Here it is: plan everything!
Easier said than done, we know, but it is so worth taking the time to formulate a real plan for your content. Knowing what you will be writing and what kind of content you will be creating makes it so much easier when it comes time to actually sit down and knock out the content.
Looking at a calendar is essential to plan out your content effectively. Some industries have busy seasons so it is important to understand when those are coming up and plan your content accordingly. (You also need to plan when you'll have time to write them if you are swamped during those seasons!)
For example, if you are in retail you likely are the busiest at the end of the year. You should be planning your content around that busy season. If you are in the wedding industry, your busy season is more like April through July. Whatever it is you do, keep it in mind as you plan your content.
Now that you have your editorial calendar in front of you, it’s time to start planning. Look at the annual one first. Think about the busy seasons like we talked about, but also think about what kinds of products or services you plan on launching this year. This doesn’t have to be your final calendar (you can print as many as you want!) so just jot down ideas as they come.
When you’re done, go back through and decide what you like and what you can keep on the back burner. Rearrange ideas as needed, and come up with a final overall annual plan. Then it’s time to tackle the monthly calendar.
You don’t have to do all 12 months at once, but we do suggest trying to plan at least quarterly. Things may change as you dig into a topic, so leave yourself some wiggle room. Plan out how often you want to post. It doesn’t have to be every week, but whatever frequency you decide on, stick with it. Consistency matters to your audience.
Keep in mind that your calendar isn’t set in stone. Things can change, current events may impact your schedule, and maybe you drop the ball occasionally. That’s ok! Just pick it back up and keep going.
